New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, admitted to the AIIMS for more than nine weeks, died on Thursday, said an official statement from the AIIMS. The veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 93, was in critical condition and was continuously receiving advanced life support. His condition deteriorated in the last 48 hours, doctors said.

“It is with deep sadness that we report on the sad disappearance of the former prime minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, at 05:05 pm on 16.18.2018,” AIIMS said in a medical bulletin.

“Shri Vajpayee joined AIIMS on 11.06.2018 and remained stable for the past 9 weeks under the care of AIIMS doctors, unfortunately, his condition worsen in the last 36 hours and he received life support systems. We have him lost today, and join the nation deeply in mourning this great loss, “AIIMS added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited the hospital twice in 24 hours to ask about his state of health. After Vajpayee’s medical condition deteriorated on Wednesday, several politicians came to visit him. Party leader Bharatiya Janata (BJP) LK Advani, BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain, BJP president Amit Shah, and Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar,  Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, were among those who visited the leader before his death.

The Prime Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, canceled her work to visit Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, BJP leader Bhupender Yadav and Jitendra Singh arrived at the Vajpayee house on Thursday afternoon. The Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, and tBihar CM Nitish Kumar, also went to Delhi to visit Vajpayee.

Several people throughout India organized religious prayers for the welfare of the sick leader. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech from the walls of Red Fort in Delhi also mentioned the approach of Vajpayee to Jammu and Kashmir (J & K). “As for J & K, the road that Atal Bihari Vajpayeeji shows is the right one, we want to proceed on that path.” Vajpayeeji said Insaniyat, Jamhuriyat, Kashmiriyat (humanism, democracy, Kashmiriyat), with these 3 basic elements that we want to develop Jammu and Kashmir, “Modi said in his speech.

Vajpayee was admitted to AIIMS for respiratory and kidney problems around 11:30 AM on June 11. He was diagnosed with urinary tract infection, low volume of urine and chest congestion. The health of Vajpayee was a cause for concern for the feast of saffron. He had undergone knee replacement surgery at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai in 2001 and had suffered a stroke in 2009 that had impaired his speech. He also suffered from diabetes and dementia. Little by little he disappeared from public life after the movement became limited. Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924 in Gwalior.
